Pool Salt Buying Guide: Bag Quantity & Refill Planning

Choose pool salt for a compatible saltwater chlorine generator. Before ordering, measure your pool’s current salt concentration, confirm its volume, and check the salt range specified by the chlorinator manufacturer.

Calculate an approximate salt addition

For U.S. gallons and parts per million (ppm), an approximate calculation is:

Pounds of salt = pool gallons × (target ppm − current ppm) × 0.00000834.

Use this only when the target exceeds the current measured concentration. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s calculation and dosing instructions; inaccurate pool volume or test results change the amount required.

Example: a 10,000-gallon pool increasing from 2,500 to 3,000 ppm requires approximately 41.7 lb. This example does not establish the correct target for your pool.

Convert pounds into bags

Divide the calculated pounds by the bag weight to estimate bags required. Ordering enough salt does not mean adding every bag immediately. Add and retest according to your equipment and product instructions.

  • 3 bags: 120 lb
  • 4 bags: 160 lb
  • 6 bags: 240 lb

Plan refills from test results

Salt top-ups depend on water loss and replacement and your measured salt level. A fixed monthly delivery may not fit your pool. Pool salt does not replace sanitizer testing, water balancing, or regular chlorinator maintenance.
